Replacement of Unit Protections at the Temelín NPP

Between 2021 and 2023, I&C Energo successfully completed the investment project “Replacement of Unit Protections” at the Temelín NPP. The preparation of project documentation, including seismic resistance tests at VTÚ Vyškov, as well as implementation, was carried out in three stages on both main production units.

The replacement concept consisted of substituting the original generator electrical protection systems and the REG216 and FREA16 output protections while maintaining the original scope of signaling to interconnected systems.

The original protection systems were replaced with protection systems supplied by SEL – SCHWEITZER ENGINEERING LABORATORY, which were installed at the Temelín NPP for the very first time.

The configuration and functionality of the new protection sets, including their extensive interfaces with other systems, were first tested during so-called small primary injections, where the testing voltage source was the Lipno HPP. The final large primary injections were subsequently performed using the Temelín turbo-alternators (TBA).
